Korean Community Legal Service

The Korean Community Legal Service (“KCLS”) was established by the Korean Australian Lawyers Association ("KALA") in 2011. Its mission is to fill a gap in the provision of community legal service particularly for Koreans who have difficulty accessing other pro-bono legal services due to lack of availability, failure to meet the means test or due to language barriers. It also provides a channel through which a growing number of Korean Australian lawyers can contribute back to the community.

The KCLS now operates independently from KALA.

The service was established after a successful pilot in 2010 in partnership with Marrickville Community Legal Centre identified that a significant number of Koreans residing in Sydney faced a common set of legal problems, and many would have neither the financial means nor the understanding of the Australian legal system to adequately seek assistance.

The service operates a monthly advice evening with a roster of 5 lawyers on the evening providing advice to up to 15 clients. Our volunteer law students take bookings and provide initial interview services on a weekly basis. It is held on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 6pm to 9pm, and consultations for free legal advice are by appointments only. The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea provides a venue and marketing for the service.
